The new Apple-designed M1 chip was exclusively installed in the MacBook Pro 13, the sole so-called Pro machine, and it has enabled it to perform better than its Intel-powered predecessor in several jobs.

The MacBook Pro 13’s 8-core CPU and 8-core GPU Apple M1 allow it to build code in Xcode up to 2.8 times faster than the Intel 13-inch Pro, render a complex 3D title in Final Cut Pro up to 5.9 times faster, perform ML tasks up to 11 times faster, and play full-quality 8K ProRes video in DaVinci Resolve without pausing. The 13-inch MacBook Pros with quad-core and dual-core processors have dramatically different GPU capacities, but Apple hasn’t disclosed which model they compare to.

But comparing the M1-equipped MacBook Pro 13 to the M1-equipped MacBook Air would be much more fascinating. Of course, the chipset is the same, but the Pro has a cooling fan while the Air does not. That by itself might show a significant difference in performance. The Pro offers a touch bar, a screen that is 500 nits brighter than the standard model’s 400 nits, better stereo speakers, higher-quality microphones, and longer battery life.

Battery life on the MacBook Pro 13 is the best on any Apple laptop to date and twice that of the Intel-equipped predecessor. Apple promises 17 hours of web browsing (2 more than the new M1-powered MacBook Air) and 20 hours of Apple TV app movie playback (2 hours more than the Air).
